Scope - Range of MTL's roles and activities

Media Technology Labs is responsible for new business development R&D within the Web strategy of Recruit as a whole. We develop new net services with technology as the source.

The evolution of Recruit and the position of MTL

Recruit was born in 1960 as a company involved in university newspaper advertising. With the providing of information in the human resource field (new graduate recruiting, career changes, etc.) as its starting point, Recruit subsequently expanded its business scope to include the life-stage domain--including important life junctures such as university entry, marriage, and housing--and the lifestyle domain--including travel, fine food, etc.

Not limiting itself to paper media as a platform for communicating information, since 1995 Recruit has been using the Internet to provide both PC and mobile phone websites in various business fields. The sales of net business have grown to where they now account for one-third of all Recruit sales. In addition to paper and the net, today Recruit continues to build new platforms for communicating finely tuned information to each customer through event management, the creation of street-corner face-to-face information counters, mail order sales, etc.

MTL is positioned at the leading edge of Recruit's platform evolution and business-field expansion. Developing new services originating in net technology, we are taking on the challenge of creating business models and media platforms as new business opportunities for the Recruit organization.

MTL Projects

Works

At MTL, members form project teams, and there are many projects simultaneously proceeding in parallel. The R&D subjects of those projects cover a diverse range.

In research encompassing PC and mobile phone Web services, social games, smartphone and tablet applications, and gadget/device-based media interfaces, MTL is working on a wide range of projects that are based on member ideas and that incorporate new net technology.

When they have progressed to the point where a business plan can be created, projects are said to "graduate" from MTL. Together with the leaders who originated and managed it, a project may then be moved to the Recruit new business development division or spun off as a subsidiary company so that it can move forward to the next stage, with its services being used by as many people as possible.

Interviews about "graduate projects"

Since the company's founding in 2006, four projects have graduated from MTL and entered a new stage of growth. Below the leaders responsible for each project talk about the role of MTL.
